Windows Installer logs are difficult for many to read, so the new external UI chainer generates an HTML log file. As a result, some customers canceled dialogs under the assumption that VS2005 SP1 was simply installing again and their machines were not updated fully, sometimes leading to destabilization of Visual Studio 2005.
#VISUAL STUDIO 2008 INSTALL PROBLEMS PATCH#
VS2005 SP1 only had a chainer to make sure the patch was correctly applied to each applicable and installed product, but did not implement an external UI handler that provided a consistent and uninterrupted user interface.

Single Installation ExperienceĮven though Visual Studio 2008 SP1 includes multiple packages – and not just for Visual Studio – a single user interface using the typical wizard style provides download and installation progress as you see below. This does mean, however, that if you later install VC++ features you will need to reinstall SP1 again in order to download and apply the separate patches.Īlso by reducing the size of the patch packages, many more customers will be able to install successfully without seeing another 1718 error message stating that the patch was rejected by digital signature policy. If you don’t have all the VC++ features installed, only part of the overall patch release is downloaded. To save time space, three separate packages are produced for each of x86, 圆4, and IA64 which contain the libraries and headers for VC++. However, libraries and headers for 圆4 and IA64 are not installed by default and some customers may not install VC++ at all if they only focus on managed languages such as VB or C#. Visual C++ libraries and headers comprised almost 70% of Visual Studio 2005 SP1 and because it was all in a single patch package, everyone had to download it. In addition, we made some additional changes we’re sure you’ll like. However, because of changes we made for VS 2008 SP1 the patch installs in about half of the average time it took for VS 2005 SP1.

The full beta download is about 761 MB which contains the 229 MB full redistributable for. Visual Web Developer installed without complaining, and Visual Studio installed A-OK as well. This means the complete download for VS 2008 SP1 is large – almost twice as large as VS 2005 SP1. Office Beta product conflict is detected on the computer, productcode=Īnd that did the trick. I went looking for the logfile the Visual Web Designer installer had created: it’s named SetupEXE( ).log and located in TEMP.Ĭatalyst beta product conflict check failed. So I went to add/remove programs, went through that list, once, twice, but nothing related to Office 2007. When starting the setup.exe from that directory, a message came up that I had to uninstall all previous betas of Office 2007 before installation of the Visual Web Developer. Then I took the stand-alone install (From your Visual Studio install DVD: \WCU\WebDesignerCore\WebDesignerCore.exe and unzipped that file to a temp directory. Next I applied all possible hotfixes to Windows, that didn’t help. So I re-installed 3.5 but that didn’t help. It seemed all-right but complained about the Framework 3.5 not being installed. The Visual Web Developer wouldn’t install.

When that was straightened the next problem arose: The fix was easily found: just make sure the permissions on the MachineKeys folder in C:\Documents & Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\Rsa\ are set properly. There was some error related to IIS: the IIS Admin Service wouldn’t start any more. Because of the troublefree install on the VPC I didn’t expect any bumps on the road.Īt first Framework 3.5 wouldn’t install. Today I started the install of Visual Studio 2008 on my main development machine.
